Ixchel is one of the most significant names to emerge from Mesoamerican civilization, belonging to the ancient Maya goddess of the moon, medicine, midwifery, weaving, and floods. The name's etymology in Yucatec Mayan is interpreted as 'Lady Rainbow' or 'She of the Pale Face,' with *Ix* being a feminine prefix (used also in the names of sacred female animals and deities) and *chel* relating to the rainbow or to a pale, shimmering quality associated with moonlight.
